i have a washer thats big enough to put a comforter in- i use woolite in cold water and dry it till its almost dry but not hot, hot. (that always works good for me)How do you clean/wash a down comforter?
You can wash it, as others have suggested, but you could ruin it this way. It is very hard to adequately dry down (if it is not dry, it may mold and/or smell musty), and if you wash it often, it will begin to get lumpy. Further, as one other person pointed out, it is hard to get the water hot enough to kill dust mites without ruining the down. If you do wash it, it helps to dry it (on low!) with something small and slightly heavy (e.g., tennis balls) to fluff it out.
Down comforters, or any other kind of comforter for that matter, are best dry-cleaned. Call ahead to make sure the dry-cleaner has the right equipment to do this, and that they have a lot of experience. You don't wnat to do this too often, because of expense and the chemicals involved, which leads to the next point:
All comforters/duvets should be covered, and used with a top sheet. This puts two layers of protection between you and the comforter. Wash the top sheet very often, and the cover occassionally (both of which you can do at home!), and you will almost never have to launder the comforter itself. How do you clean/wash a down comforter?
cold wash lay flat over towels until dry
According to a website I just checked out, it is recommended that a down comforter be professionally cleaned for several different reasons such as most home washers are not big enough to handle a load like a down comforter. To check out tips for your comforter, you might try checking out www.allergyconsumerreview.com/down-comfo鈥?as it has all kinds of recommendations for you.
Ohhhh I just did this!
Laundromat. Triple Loader. Half the soap. Cold water. Fluff a few minutes only on low. Line dry. Beautiful!
Best wishes.
Either take it to the dry cleaners. Or take it to the laundromat and use the front loading oversized washer and dryer but when you put it in the dryer put a tennis ball in with the comforter.
Take it to the laundry mat, use the triple load machine, put the comforter in loosely. Use oxi-wash, do not use detergent, bleach or fabric softer. Use 1/3 cup of oxi-clean in warm water, [cold water will not kill the dust mitts and bacteria down stores] wash normally on gentle cycle. Do not use fabric softener or fabric sheets because it will ruin the downs natural ability to absorb your body heat.
Place in large dryer on low to med heat, damp dry then hang outside if possible. If you have to dry in dryer choose the low heat option. Once out of the dryer or off the line shake, shake and shake some more to get the down back to it's natural state.
go to laundry matt and use there huge machine {triple loader} place inside and this allows the comforter plenty of room to move about use gentle cycle and gentle soap...hang on clothes line to dry ...two people grab an end and shake to re-fluff
